Our dogs are fed raw meat including: minced chicken, chicken wings, chicken carcasses, poultry necks, minced lamb, lamb rib and lamb neck bones, chunks of beef, minced beef, tripe, rabbit, raw liver and heart; eggs, fish including white fish, salmon and sardines. The meat is supplemented with a small amount of high quality dry kibble (Dr Timm's when racing), herbal supplements, salmon oil, kelp, garlic and liquidised vegetables. Finn loves carrots but the others are not so sure about vegetables or fruit but will eat them if small enough and mixed in with the rest of the food!
Although these are extremely beautiful, loyal and companionable dogs please research the breed very carefully and thoroughly if you are considering giving one a home. These really are a lifestyle choice and will not suit every family nor will every family be able to best meet their needs.
If after the research you do consider that you can provide a suitable stable home you must choose a breeder very carefully. The AMCUK has a list of accreditated breeders and also KC registered Alaskan Malamutes which need rehoming. Both sire and dam should be hip scored ('13' is the current breed average) and eye tested 'clear' for hereditary cataracts. The dam should be at least 2 years old but not over 8 years old (6 if this is her first litter), and the sire at least 18 months old. You should preferably be able to meet both parents but at the very least to see the mother with her pups so that you can judge her temperament. The puppies should not leave home before 8 weeks of age and must be Kennel Club registered (or you will not be able to enter them in KC shows or races) and have had their first set of innoculations and been regularly wormed. A good breeder will encourage you to keep in contact and raise any ongoing concerns that you may have with them throughout your dogs lifetime.
